Railands

In cooperation with a number of training organizations and with funding from several levels of government we have embarked on a Trackman's Training Program.  It is primarily offered to First Nations and Metis students.

To date several switches have been repaired, cracked rails replaced and  crossings refurbished. The extension to the 34 St. gate has been completely upgraded. All that remains is to level and re-ballast this 540 ft. of track.

We also have plans for an additional display track that will give us more than 1,000 feet of track around the south boundary of the parking lot.  It will not interfere with the parking but will allow us to put more of our collection on display.

We are waiting for the fill clay to complete that project.

The students live on the property for about 4 weeks.  They get training in track laying and operation of heavy equipment.

Thanks to Niall Smith and Don Weymouth for supervising this major initiative.

Community Investment Program

We are pleased to have been awarded a 2009 Community Investment Program Arts and Museums Building Operating Grant from the Edmonton Arts Council and City of Edmonton. The award letter states:

"This grant, in the amount of $3,407.97 is to support a portion of the costs associated with maintaining clean, well-lighted, heated and secure facilities that are accessible by the public and primarily dedicated for use by a range of not-for-profit arts and cultural groups."

Honorary Patron

The Honourable Norman Kwong, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, has been our Honorary Patron for the length of his appointment to the position. A new Lieutenant Governor, Col. Donald Ethell has been appointed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.  Col. Ethell will be asked to become our Honorary Patron.

Premier Ed Stelmach welcomed the appointment of Col. Donald Ethell as Alberta’s Lieutenant Governor designate.

“I’m pleased to welcome Col. Ethell as Alberta’s next Lieutenant Governor,” said Premier Stelmach. “Col. Ethell has had a long and distinguished career as one of Canada’s most decorated and experienced peacekeepers, for which he was honoured in 2001 with the Alberta Order of Excellence. I’m confident that Col. Ethell will serve Albertans well in his new role.”
